Any illegal system can be shutdown. Bitcoin is designed specifically to exist in the law. It has an evidence trail, it can be traced.
The push for more anonymity is just a desire for drug coin and this is simple to stop. The BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) makes it simple for government to control much of this.
